The Cider House Rules is a movie about Homer Wells, who was an orphan boy who grew up under the guidance of an altruistic gynecologist called Doctor Wilbur Larch who directed an orphanage to help homeless children find a home. He also helped women who needed an abortion even though it was illegal at that time. Homer Wells got along very well with all the kids at the orphanage. One day a young couple arrived to get an abortion, and after the operation a few days later, they were ready to leave. Homer asked if he could come with them and they said yes. They drove up to an apple orchard, which was the young man’s family business. Homer joins the apple orchard business and becomes good friends with the Rose family who are the people that collect the apples. The man who owned the apple orchard was an American soldier and one day he took off to war. Then his wife who was called Candy became good friends with Homer and at one stage they started having a small affair while the Rose family was on holiday. When they came back the atmosphere was a little tight and Homer and Candy quickly found the problem. Rose Rose who was the youngest member of the family and the only girl was made pregnant by her father. In the beginning Homer refuses to make an abortion but at last he does it. The next morning Homer walked into her room to check if she’s was okay but she had ran away and when Mr. Rose tried to stop her she stabbed him with a knife. Mr. Rose died and at the same time Doctor Wilbur Larch also died because he took too much sleeping medicine. At the end of the film Homer decided to go back to the orphanage and follow Doctor Wilbur Larch’s footprints as a gynecologist at the orphanage.
