When we talk about new narcissism today, we talk about people, mostly youngsters, who have some sort of need to idolize themselves. Narcissism is the personal trait of vanity, conceit and egoism and the phenomenon comes from the story of Narcissus. Narcissus was according to Greek myth a handsome young man who fell in love with his own reflection from a pool. The idea of this phenomenon in relation to psychiatry was first invented by the Austrian doctor Sigmund Freud, who had worked with psychoanalysis for many years. Freud believed that some narcissism is an essential part of being human.
But the phenomenon has clearly been developed in the last few years. The internet has given a huge amount of narcissism to the world. Now everyone can upload videos of themselves screaming their favourite song into some video camera on cyberspace. But, why do people have a need to get that kind of attention?
It is also seen in the newest reality shows like X-Factor, American Idol or Wipe-out. People actually go to auditions for shows, where they know that in the moment they go through that door into the audition rooms, there is a huge possibility of them making a fool out of themselves. But we can all see that those people gladly do it, especially in talent shows where the auditioners are convinced that they deserve some success in life – despite their total lack of talent. They are ready to do anything that it takes to get either money, a few moments of fame or even just attention. Sometimes all of those things in one time.
