I have wondered if Amish children get the same primary education as we do here in Denmark, so I will tell you about differences and similarities between their school system and ours. There are many differences in the Amish schools. The school day starts at 8.30 am and ends at 3.30 pm. Amish children are taught in reading, math, writing, history and geography. In Denmark we also have physics and chemistry, and we use a lot if electronic equipment in the classroom such as computer, blackboards, calculators and so on. The Amish children don’t use any electronics at all, because they think that their families are the most important, and they may not be parted by the electronics which is computer, phones and so on. For example, they don’t own cars, they carry around with buggies. The Amish children do only attend school through eight classes, and they are not allowed to take a higher education. The school house can only have one for two classrooms, and neither of them has got electricity. In Denmark we teach in many different rooms all depending on what is taught, and if there was no electricity, there would not be Danish schools. As mentioned earlier, the Amish children do not go primary education like us. They are divided into boys and girls, meaning the children go to school in gender classes: a class with girls and one with boys. The teaching is divided into boys and girls as well. Grades 1 to 8 are in the same room, the students are total with all grade levels, where we in Denmark are sitting each grade for themselves. The Amish school system is based on coop ration, so it’s about cooperation work and helping each other to finish, where the Danish school system is running mainly on the grades. You keep getting told that you must be among the best in the class to get a further education. Another difference is, that in Amish school toilets are located outdoors, and it’s probably more a locum than a normal toilet.
