Analyse af 'Poetic Justice' og Jed Cunning

Jed Cunning is the boy who the female narrator fell in love with back in high school. She describes him as a tall guy but skinny and with thick black hair and blue eyes. He was very spontaneous and lived for the day and didn’t think about the past or future though his plan was to be a poet. He is not a fan of school and he had never really participated. Even though he didn’t like school, he was very intelligent, and therefore he frightened his teachers. He could see through the teachers which was their job to see trough them and to learn them about life, but Jed already knew everything. He was a popular guy and therefore he also had popular friends, but he also had friends who were not popular, they were like the nerdy/weird type of guys, so Jed was a boy who had the ability to make friends with all types of people. He was the person that everybody back in school looked up to.

The narrator’s relationship with Jed back in the high school-days was very complicated. They never really said their feelings towards each other even though they both had feelings involved. They were unlike each other. Jed wanted to be a poet and therefore he was spontaneous and unexpected, like real poets are. She was the kind of girl who had the future all planed for her. Her parents expected that she would go to university and get a career and be successful. So the narrator was not spontaneous or wild, but Jed somehow got the wild side out of her and she became a person like him and got caught up in his world. They were each others complete contrasts and that was what kept them together. Their relationship was very powerful according to the narrator. She imagined them having a future together with children and a family. They were much in love with each other and lived in their own little world away from the real world, like the narrator describes as a “parallel universe”. They never made love to each other, which made their relationship even more bombastic because they never really came that close to each other and that just made their love more innocent and exciting. Like I said before, the narrator and Jed were very different and that was what kept them together but it was also what separated them. Jed wanted to go and live in Ireland and have a life with no responsibility. He didn’t want to live a life that everyone expected him to have. The narrator complained and said it was a stupid and an unrealistic dream and Jed became angry and left. Even though the narrator had been fascinated by Jed’s world for years, because it was so different compared to her own life, and she had some how been a part of it, but when it came to the point, she didn’t wanted to live like that for the rest of her life, she wanted the “normal” life that Jed resisted so badly.
