The short story ”Poetic Justice” is written by Diana Appleyard and is a story told by a middle aged woman, who is looking back at her youth with a blend of feelings among regret, remorse and curiosity concerning how her everyday life could have turned out, if she had chosen differently. It is like she does not recognize the woman she has become and she feels stuck in her daily routines and a steady lifestyle with her husband, children and dogs.
In the beginning of the telling we are hearing about this woman’s thoughts regarding a website for old classmates and schoolmates, which intensions are bringing them closer and reuniting them after several years apart. Suddenly she is discovering a person on the website - a person she was not expecting to see. It was her old, passionate and long lost love from their previous school, named Jed Cunningham. He meant a lot to her when she was seventeen-years-old, and therefore she has never forgotten him or his looks. She starts thinking back on their former love life, the things they were doing and the thoughts they were thinking. He was the coolest and most intelligent student at the school, almost an icon, since he was standing out of the crowd and everybody was following him and wanted to be like him, either it was the way he was dressing or the unique way he was smoking his cigarettes – even the teachers were respecting him. He was an extraordinary dreamer, who was living his dreams to the fullest, and his biggest dream was moving to Ireland and becoming a poet to do the unexpected. Their young and innocent relationship was an incredible time of her life, and lasted for two years. It had a huge influence on her life, and an impact on the woman she has become. It ended in the middle of a massive fight, and they had not been talking since.
