Ellis Island is an Island in New York. Ellis Island opened for immigrates 1. January 1892. The island was a gateway for millions of immigrates to the Unites States from 1892-1934. Over twelve million immigrants from all over the world (mostly from Europe) would take the ferry to Ellis Island to get “accepted” as an American citizen. America was a very new country and therefore they could afford all the people coming to their country. There didn’t live that many people because it was such a new country and they needed people to come and live and especially work in/for The United States.

Access to the United States

At this time most of the world wasn’t well – founded. Many countries had a lack of money and work. Therefore it would be obvious to leave to what they at that time saw as the promised country with the milk and honey (Det forjættede land). In the promising country everything is possible and they saw it as a second chance. When immigrants arrived to Ellis Island everybody lined up in a chew and had to go through a medical check. Where they would be check for all kinds of diseases. Mostly contagious. For them who were tested positive those who didn’t have any diseases where now American citizens and where allowed to access the United States. They also got about 10 $ and then they were sent with a ferry officially into the country. Those who were tested negative were sent back to their original homes.
