At the picture you see a family, a mother and tree children. They immigrated to the USA from France in 1920. Their dad just passed away two years earlier, in 1918, at the end of the first world war.
The tree children looked kind of confused and scared, while the mother looked a little bit angry. It is understandable after all that had happened to the family, their long trip over the Atlantic Ocean and the beginning of a whole new life.
The family just arrived on Ellis Island, standing in the line, and waiting to go through the medical inspection. The only luggage the family had with them was the bag standing in between them, and the bag the boy was holding over his shoulder. That also shows us that they were not a wealthy family. Their mother had to sell anything they had, besides the things in the two bags, to get enough money, for the long trip over the Atlantic Ocean. The girl is holding her brother’s hand, which also shows that they feel unconfutable and unsafe, after an awful sail.
The family is hoping to get through the line without any problems. They are planning to go visit a family member in Boston, but how they are going to get there, they don’t know jet. They will figure it out when they are on the other side.
