I have this photograph before me. The first thing I see in this photo is the family. I see a father, wearing a suit and a hat, holding his child´s hand, and in the other hand he has got a suitcase. Next to the father is the mother of the family, and in between them, there is a basket lying on the ground. The mother is standing in a dress next to the oldest son, who is wearing what looks like a suit. The other boy is wearing a sailor´s uniform. The whole family is standing very close together. They are standing on the docks of what I think might be Ellis Island. They are all looking far into the horizon. By looking at all their luggage, it appears that they are travelling. Most possibly the city that they are looking at. But what city are they moving to, and what are their plans in this unknown city? Since the picture is only consisting of the colors black and white, I assume that this is a very old photograph, which makes me think that this is a family of immigrants. The most popular place to travel as an immigrant, is none other than New York City. That´s right. The city that never sleeps. The Big Apple. Most immigrants went to New York in the beginning of the 20th century, so it is probably around there, this photograph was taken. The mood in this photo is really confident but hopeful at the same time. The family´s body posture looks really confident, and I can imagine that the looks on their face are happy faces looking forward to this new way of life. The City might be a bit difficult to see because of the very foggy weather. Back then, when a lot of immigrants travelled to New York may be because they had a poor life, and wanted to improve their way of life. It could also be because they did not have as many options or possibilities in their own country as they will have in New York City. But one thing they had in common was that they were all trying to live the American dream.
