We arrived to Ellis Island, New York, two days ago, with a bunch of other people aboard the big steamship Nevada. I have never been on such a big boat before, so that was pretty exciting. I really like to sail, and when I was younger dad used to take me sailing in this little boat. Both [NAVN A] and [NAVN B] got very seasick, so it was a rough trip for them. After we had been sailing for 12 days, we finally arrived to New York. We grabbed our bags, and got ready to get off the boat nearly an hour before we came ashore, just to make sure that we would be the first to arrive to New York. As soon as we came ashore we ran to the registry desk where a nice gentleman, Mr. Charles M. Hanley, sad. He is a private secretary to the late Secretary Windom, and he had apparently asked to register the first immigrant. So he shook our hands, and welcomed us to The United States, and to New York. Because I was the first to arrive he gave me 10 dollar gold coin. I have never, in my entire life, had that much money.
