The first time we are introduced to Romeo, we become familiar with a devastated boy who has been denied by whom he considered as the love of his life, Rosaline. How he grasps that, is portrayed in the love shared between him and Juliet. Romeo is basically a raw bag of emotion. He is driven by them and also controlled by them. Everything he senses or experiences is counted to a very intense level. But this is not necessarily bad. If he didn’t have such capacity for intense feeling, his and Juliet’s love might have never existed. Love and hate and violence are the main themes when it comes to characterizing Romeo.
In the play, Romeo and Juliet, we come across other important characters, such as Tybailt and Mercutio. Mercutio, a joyful character whom is a close friend of Romeo, gets slain by Tybailts sword. Tybailt is Juliet’s cousin and like the rest of the Capulet family, they despise Romeo and the rest of the Montague family. Mercutio’s death arouses Romeo with uttermost hate and results in Romeo killing Tybailt. Romeo’s love for Mercutio causes violence due to Romeo’s hate towards Tybailt for killing Mercutio. We can therefore conclude that Romeo is immature as a lover. He is very fond of love poetry as it is revealed in the beginning where we find him whining and moaning about Rosaline whilst writing poetry. But as a social person, Romeo is rather mature. He is portrayed as intelligent, quick-witted, brave and a joker with a good sense of humor. Nonetheless, his level of maturity as a lover changes throughout the story. Taking in consideration, the fact that he committed suicide for the sake of his seemingly dead soul mate, made his love for Juliet eternal.
