”Sugar Baby”, is a Scottish short story written by Fiona Gibson, published in the year 2000, and it’s discusses the conflicts in a young, modern family and the difference between them and the elder generations. In this essay will I focus on the main characters, the settings and the themes of the story. The setting of the story is set in the Old Town of Edinburgh, the main capital of Scotland. The story evolves a young, modern family that consists of a mother, a grandmother, a father and a father. The grandmother takes care of the baby sometimes. We don’t hear much about the environment they live in, except that they live in the city and live a modern lifestyle.

Joe the father, is the main character, his a young man, that lives the modern life. He is a loving father that wants his baby all the best he can get in the future. Sadly, he is a very overprotective man, particularly when it comes to the child’s food. He is especially disapproving of feeding their son with food with a lot of sugar. I do believe in that the father is in a young age and have a lack of life experience as a parent, this is causing to his strange behavior. He does not have experience in childcare and therefore collects knowledge from books whit information he have full believes in. Joe is a curios and analytical man. “Joe was a man who liked to know things and be involved”. Joe likes being on top of things, and he is making sure of that through the knowledge. One of his problems is that all that he knows is theoretically. He knows a lot about healthy food, but not much about how to raise his child. He is the opposite of the grandmother. She knows a lot about how to take care of a baby but doesn’t care about what the baby eats. We being notified about that Joe personality have changed since Helen gave birth to their child. “All kids had started to look massive since they’d had the baby. Everything looked different since he had the baby” He looks at the world with the eye of a father without any experience. He is living in a world where he fears for his son’s welfare. Everything he has experience in his life is now the mistake in the world he and his son are living in.
