Marilyn Monroe was and still is, a well known icon for many women all over the world. She was born the 1st June 1926 at the Los Angeles County Hospital with the name, Norma Jeane Mortenson.
Norma’s mother was mentally ill, and that resulted in a rough childhood. Because her mother couldn’t take care of her, she lived with several family members, friends and frequently stayed in orphanages.
When Norma Jeane was 16 years old, a friend of the family proposed to her so she didn’t have to go to any orphanages ever again, and they got married a few months later.
She was working at a factory in 1945, when a photographer took a snapshot of the really beautiful brunette. It didn’t take more than a couple of months, before she became a successful model. She was on the cover of dozens of magazines, and soon she made a screen test with 20th Century Fox. People started to notice her, and photographers, different magazines and others wanted her. By the end of 1946, her hair was blonde and her name was changed to Marilyn Monroe.
Over a little more than a decade, Marilyn was loved. She starred in films such as “How to Marry a Millionaire”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “The Seven-Year Itch” and “Some like It Hot”. The New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther reported on her breakthrough role in Bus Stop in 1956, “HOLD onto your chairs, everybody, and get set for a rattling surprise. Marilyn Monroe has finally proved herself an actress in “Bus Stop”. She and the picture are swell!” Marilyn Monroe received two Golden Globe awards for her performances in “Some like it hot” and “Bus Stop”.
