Religion in India Religion is very important in Indian society. India is one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world.

There are many deeply religious communities, and religion plays a strong role in most people’s lives.

The two most important religions in India are Hinduism and Islam.

The biggest religious group – more than 80% and 800 million of the population - consists of Hindus.

The second largest religion is Islam, covering 13% of the population and nearly 140 million Indians.

In addition, there are the Christians, Sikhs, and Jains and numerous other religious groups.

Considering the enormous differences of race, class and religion in India, these groups coexist surprisingly peacefully. However, there are occasionally violent clashes, especially between Muslims and Hindus.

Killing of baby girls

In India many parents prefer to have boy rather than girl children. This is partly due to the “dowry” system, when a sum of money is paid by the parents of the bride to the family of the groom.

The dowry system makes it expensive to have only girls, whereas a family with many boys will be relatively better-off. This means that many women who are expecting a girl have abortions. Sometimes baby girls are even killed. It has also meant that there is now a shortage of women and girls in India.
