I chose this topic because it was a big historical breaking point for India. They went from being one of the most developed countries in the world to one of the poorest countries (At the time being). I think it is very fascinating, that an entire country can be ruined for centuries because of an invasion by a foreign power. So, what I am going to be presenting to you is the colonization of India, by the British Empire.

The rise of the British Empire

The British Empire originated in the Age of Discovery were the European countries sailed out, for conquests and trades. It all started with Christopher Columbus who sailed out in 1492 and colonized America. And On New Year’s Eve in 1600, Queen Elizabeth the 1 signed a contract that permitted more than 200 merchants to compete against the Dutch, French, Spanish, and Portuguese in the West Indies. But they failed.

The East Indian company and India

After the merchants lost in the West Indies, they moved their attention towards India and changed their name to “The East Indian Company”. There were already some countries in India, before the East Indian Company. The Danish, Portuguese and Dutch were all in India before the English. But in 1640 “the company” succeed in securing a piece of land in India, where they made a fort called, Fort Saint-George. The Brits also had another fort named Surat. Because of these forts, the East Indian trading company became very profitable. They traded mostly silk, spices, and tea.
