Being Amish are for the English people a very different way to live. We’re living and working like we did in the old days without electricity or any smart tools for making our everyday life easier. We work on our farm. To work on our farm is not just our job. It is our lifestyle we are grown up with. Some people think we live like slaves, but we absolutely don’t. We are happy as we are, we just have different rules than the English have.
When we turn 16 everything looks different to us. Our rumspringa period starts and it means that we can choose how we want to live the rest of our life. We can choose to live like the English or we can stay Amish. Rumspringa means “running around” and some call our rumspringa a kind of freedom and it also is; we try to live like normal English teenagers do. We act free, we party almost every single weekend and some of us do drugs.
After the rumspringa period decides about 80-90% to stay Amish. But what are you supposed to do if you decide to leave the Amish community forever? Go alone, about seventeen years old without any education just the primary school, to a place where nothing is like you’re used to. I thought it was too confusing and I couldn’t live without my family so I decided for about a year ago to stay Amish. The Amish people are close to their family and we always help each other, so not seeing my family the rest of my life would be terrible for me. Of course sometimes I miss things from my rumspringa. For example I miss my friends, the electricity and the normal clothes I wore. Actually I don’t miss the parties that much, I have had enough of them but it was fun anyway. But I think that my decision was the right and I haven’t regretted it because during my rumspringa I also missed the Amish lifestyle and my family.
