[Words: 164]Let us take a closer look at the ´hero´ of the movie Blood Diamons, Mister Archer. In order to fully understand this complex character we must first understand the moral and ethical dilemma of illegal “conflict diamonds” being stolen and smuggled by Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio). This character has an unethical and immoral business dilemma he must deal with, and during the movie he does this through other characters he encounters during the Sierra Leone Civil War of 1999. One of these characters is Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), a native of the region that has been captured and forced into slavery as a diamond miner that invariably comes into contact with Archer after he discovers a large and rare diamond that he hides during his work shift. This aspect of the film opens the possibility of Archer slowly coming to realize his immorality and unethical business practices, as Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly) acts as a moral voice through her journalism and her own personality.________________________________________ [Words: 291]After President Charles Taylor stepped down from office on Aug. 11 and went into exile in Nigeria children the children of Liberia have found themselves with the opportunity to once again attend school. Unfortunately many children, so called ´child combatants´ These children are young boys who are abducted from their families or lured into service by the promise of glory and fortune. These children makes ceasefire and peace a rather difficult goal to obtain. UNICEF is doing the best they can to help the child soldiers put down their guns and re-enter society. Some estimates put the number of child soldiers between 300,000 and 400,00 worldwide, these soldiers can be found in every region of the world.
