The movie “Tsotsi” is about a young man, called Tsotsi, who lives in a poor township in South Africa. His only way to survive the tough standards is to commit violent crimes along with his friends. One day the violence gets out of hand, and Tsotsi ends up shooting a woman and stealing her car. Suddenly he realizes that the woman’s child is in the car. Even though Tsotsi seem like a man without emotions, he takes the baby boy with him, instead of leaving him. Tsotsi nurtures and takes care of the boy the best he can. He gets help from a woman, and the end she convinces him to deliver the baby back to his parents.

The setting is in Soweto, outside Johannesburg. In a township where neat little houses, shacks, dirt and smoke dominates the African landscape. The surroundings seem real and authentic, which creates a lifelike feeling in the scenes. The society is living in the township and surviving under harsh and desperate living conditions. The description of the town, by slowly zooming out and showing how big and dirty it is, works nicely on camera and it creates an insight of the South Africans way of life and the environment. After we get an impression of how the South African people are living in this spectacular town, we get introduced to one of the themes, poverty. We meet Tsotsi who is gathered around a table with his friends for a game with dices. All of the members in this group are black. The game they are playing requires the ability to mental arithmetic, which the most of the group does not have. They keep getting the answers wrong, which indicates their lack of education. The film does not depicts this problem, but gives little clues and hints, and shows how badly South Africa is affected by the problem of people who do not have an education. It is an attempt to show how absurd it is that young men can’t add four with five. This should give something to think about - I think it succeeds.
