DJ Williams is a dancer in inner-city Los Angeles. He and his younger brother Duron compete in local dance competitions as members of a crew known as the "Goon Squad". The Goon Squad wins a cash-prized battle, held one night at an underground competition, and the losing home crew responds by ambushing DJ and his crewmates after the show. A fight breaks out, and the leader of the rival group shoots Duron and kills him.
Arrested for assault, DJ is subsequently sent by his mother to live with his aunt Jackie and Uncle Nate in Atlanta, Georgia, where he is to attend Truth University. Nate, the physical plant director at Truth University, starts to teach DJ responsibility, and puts him to work doing maintenance of gardens at the university, as part of a work-study program.
While waiting in the line to register for classes, DJ sees a fellow student named April Palmer, who he is immediately attracted to. April happens to be the girlfriend of Grant, who is a stepper (dancer) for Mu Gamma. Mu Gamma is one of two rival fraternities (the other being Theta Nu Theta) who annually compete in a national stepping competition, which Mu Gamma has dominated. After winning a dance battle against Grant at a party, DJ finds himself in great demand, by both fraternities: Mu Gamma to continue their winning ways, and Theta Nu to finally break Mu Gammas stranglehold on the title. In the process, and through his pursuit of April, DJ decides to make himself an enemy of Grant and Mu Gamma. When DJ decides to pledge Theta Nu, the battle is on for the stepping championship, as well as for April and DJ's self redemption from his past.
