In this picture you can see a mother and her daughter in front of their little tin house, when it´s winter it is very cold in their house because it is made of junk. They live in South Africa in Johannesburg. They are very poor and that’s why they live in the so-called townships. The police killed her husband while he was stealing some food. She lost her son because of aids, so it is only her and her daughter left in the family. It´s very common that children die of diseases in Africa. She thought when apartheid was over and Nelson Mandela became president, everything would be better and there wouldn’t be as much poverty. But there is still a difference between poor and rich. It´s still the white people that are rich, but there is now a rich black upper class.
Some say, that it is the black people who are getting even, but it´s not anything [NAVN A] and her 3 years old daughter [NAVN B] can feel in the townships. Many people are moving to the townships because of the big unemployment in the country. The crimes in the townships are increasing because of the unemployment. The police are arresting 5 people a day in the townships because of assaults and shoplifting. [NAVN A] earn money on the junkyard, everyday she is on the junkyard looking for some junk she can get money from. That´s how she provide food for her self and [NAVN B]. Often they don’t get any food, it´s very difficult to find junk that has got a value.
