Townships og Desmond Tutu i Sydafrika

In South America, the term township refers to the urban areas under apartheid, where the black and so called Coloureds lived. The urban areas were usually built on the periphery of a big city, but they were sometimes also built in towns.

During Apartheid, the Black were evicted from their home there were situated in areas designated as ``white only´´ and forced to move into townships. Forced removal from cities to townships has continued in the post-apartheid South Africa. The difference is that under the apartheid era, all black people were evicted to townships. Nowadays it’s only the poor living in so called ``shack settlements´´ that are moved to townships.

The new townships being built to house people that were forcibly removed from their home, have much smaller houses and are sometimes even longer away from the city centers than they were under the apartheid era. But actually not all of the townships are that shitty (sorry, my language). There are some old townships from the apartheid era, which since 1994 have been under rapid development which equals, that the most people there gets higher income and some even gets to move out of the township and back into the town or cities.
