The next examples are that love is not “slumber nor a roof against the rain”. By saying this she is stating that love can’t replace the requirement of sleep and rest that the human body needs. Love won’t keep one safe out of the rain. Love can’t replace shelter or sleep.
Millay admits that love is “Not a floating spar to men that sink/And rise and sink and rise and sink, and sink again.” When she says this Millay uses her words to explain what it is like for a drowning man. In the description a man goes under water and rises above a couple times. The third time the man sinks in a losing battle and in the end sinks forever and dies. Millay is also explaining that often in life people have ups and downs. Love won’t stop a person from suffering and it won’t prevent someone from ultimately dying in the end or having things end badly in the end.
