“The Facebook Sonnet” talks about the online world taking control of people’s lives. Sherman Alexie uses irony in her poem such as “let’s undervalue and unmend the present” which is what people do when they get caught up using social medias and keep updating what is happening in their lives. She uses the similarly “endless high-school reunion” to express how we always have an insight in other people’s lives even though they’re not physically present in our lives. The message in the poem is to “exhume, resume, and extend childhood” instead of pretending that the online world is the only world we know, and instead of playing all “the games that occupy the young”. She states that we have gone too far by saying that our search for God has become public domain and church.com has replaced our weekly visit at church. Social medias have taken control of our lives and has decreased the time we talk face to face. Generally, she has a negative view of the way we use social medias such as Facebook and how it is being used. In the end of the poem Facebook is being referred to as an “altar of loneliness” that is also being used to criticize our choice of always using social medias.
