The year was 1871 and there were war in Scotland. It was England who was attacking Scotland. They tried to take over Scotland, as they had tried many times before, but this time it was different. England had come a bit further than Scotland in technology, and they had started to get better and better weapons. So that made it much harder for the Scottish people to hold back the Englishmen. The Englishmen started by trying to invade the big cities, which meant that many of the small children and the woman's in the big cities had to be evacuated.
The family MacMartin had a giant castle out on the country. The castle was located far away from any city, and there were many miles to the nearest neighbour. Out there the little family had its own fields and many sheep's. The family liked it at the castle although it was quiet, and there didn't happen much. The castle had been owned by the MacMartin family for many generations, and it was also the MacMartin family who build the big castle for a long time ago. Now there lived seven persons in the house. There lived the mom, the dad, their three boys called Alex, Angus and Andrew, and then there also lived two farmhands.
