The parents are happy and excited to move and can’t wait to get there while Charles doesn’t seem as excited as they do. The father seems to be a kind and polite person along with the mother. “The mother said: It’s a lovely place. Those must be the playing-fields. Look darling, there are some of the boys. She clicked open her handbag and the sun caught her mirror and flashed in the child’s eyes; the comb went through her hair he saw the grooves it left, neat as distant ploughing. Come on, then, Charles out you go.” as you can see on page 56 line 4-8. These lines clearly show that the mother is trying so hard to excite Charles even though he doesn’t seem to think much about the place. After being threatened by the kids, Charles seems to be afraid. The child does not answer. He looks straight ahead of him at the road coiling beneath the bonnet of the car. His face haggard with anticipation. “Next term, we’ll mash you” as you can see on page 59 line 5-7. A new start for whom?The happiest days of your life is when something big happens, and unfortunately for Charles those are not the days. He is about to move to a place that he doesn’t like one bit, and to top it all off he’s going to get beaten up or mocked really bad at his new school, the children he met were really condescension to him. “Next term we’ll mash you,” It says “We always mash new boys”. As you can see page 58 line 26-27. So you can’t really blame him for not talking at all or getting as excited as his parents are.Charles had black hair, flicked down smooth to his head. His ears, too large, jutted out, transparent in the light from the window, laced with tiny delicate veins. His clothes had the shine and crease of newness. This describes Charles as you can see on page 56 line 31-33.Charles seems to be the quiet boy who doesn’t say his opinion or speaks at all. Based on what I’ve read he’s mothers-boy. He doesn’t really say much, yet he is so spoiled. “THE boy sat on the back seat of the car, a box of chocolates, unopened beside him, and a comic, folded.” As you can see page 54 line 1-2. That’s not the only thing. He keeps getting asked about everything by his mother, he doesn’t take initiative to ask about anything himself. Which for me can mean that he is used to get asked about everything. “All right Charles, you didn’t get sick in the car, did you?” as you can see at page 56 line 30. Is it good to be spoiled?Charles being spoiled, is also somehow good. We already know that he doesn’t have a bad relationship with his parents. But we actually don’t know if he likes his parents, because he didn’t say a word in the whole source/article we read. But we must assume that he likes them, he’s just being shy or in a bad mode, because they’re about to move away from the place he probably wants to be at. Which is understandable, I’d probably done the same if I was in the same situation.The short story is a perfect example on of how parents act on their own, and think their children is on board with their idea. This story is about a couple of married people who wants to move away from their own town. They have a child who doesn’t seem to like moving, yet they’re almost forcing him to move. It doesn’t matter how nice they are to him, they need to discuss their ideas with the children, IF it has an influence on this children. If it doesn’t they are free to do and say whatever they want.You can clearly see on Charlie that he doesn’t want to move, and the fact that he is going to get beaten or mocked already from the beginning isn’t a good sign for his future. And that’s the problem with today’s parents. They have no idea what is going on in their child’s life.
