Charles Dickens was born on February 7th 1812 in Portsmouth in England, and he died in his home on June 9th 1870. He and his family moved a lot, because of his father’s job. The father was office employee. Charles’ mother was Elizabeth Dickens, and his father was John Dickens. He was the second of eight children. The father often spent his money, before he got them. He came in the debt-prison in Southward when Charles was only 12 years old. Charles was taken out of the school and came to the labour market. He worked in the factory, called Hungerford Market. He worked for one year, and lived on a boarding house. Here he experienced big poverty and need. It inspired his works.
In 1826 his grandmother died and the family inherited some money and the father was then able to pay off his debt. Charles would rather read a book than play with the others. Charles Dickens is considered to be one of England’s greatest novelists of the Victorian period, and he is one of the last century’s biggest English novelist and the biggest humorous person, who was born in England.
H. C. Andersen and Charles Dickens were good friends. Andersen visits him twice in England. They write letters to each other in ten years and there were always small poems and small sweet words in the letters.
