Here, at last, is the definitive story of Jason and the WTC. It's
partly so that I can stop retelling it, and partly as a way t8o keep me from embellishing as the years go on. Sometimes I do that.
So...
I got to work, on time, for once, at 9:30am. As I got out of the
subway, I noticed that traffic was stopped downtown, and that folks were staring up at the sky. Sure enough, black clouds rose and billowed up from the World Trade Center. There was fire coming out of the windows up in the 80's - you've seen the pictures. After a few minutes of gawking, I grabbed my morning fruit (as always, from the cute guy with the "Allah (heart)You!"- bumper sticker on his van), then went up to the office.
As you may or may not know, I work at the Alliance for Downtown New York, "promoting lower Manhattan as a 24-hour, safe, totally wired live-work community." We're on the 33rd floor of the Equitable building – about a block and a half from the World Trade Center Towers. I was working as technical support for our huge Dine Around Downtown! - event. Dine Around was a headache. Endless details to get 40 downtown restaurants assembled at the World Trade Center Plaza on Wednesday for outdoor food sampling.
