a) Explain why these people are called ”Mole People” and why they are living “underground”?
The homeless people that live under large cities in abandoned subways and tunnels are called Mole People. The reason for that is because moles are adapted to a subterranean lifestyle, and so are the homeless people living underground.
b) Explain how they survive, and also how the people from above look upon them.
Some of the Mole People survive by having menial jobs, fresh water pipes, power cables, collecting cans, begging for food during the day, and eating the food that the restaurants and people throw away. The reason why they collect cans is because some stores give money for the cans that are collected. The Mole People live not too near the surface, though not too far either, although there are some who live very far away from the surface.
c) Do the “Mole People” get any official help and why did they move into the tunnels in the first place?
Since the Mole People are not a part of ‘the official city’, they are mostly not given help with their health or welfare. It is usually the mental ills that get aid from the MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority), for the reason that they want to keep them safe because they occasionally get hit by trains, since they walk on the train tracks.
