I work in a kindergarten as a nursery nurse, 35 hours a week. We are rated to 60 children, where 10 of them are a special group, with various diagnoses, such as autism. We are hired 13 people, where 5 of them are associated to the special group. Because they need extra support in their daily lives, in order to be able to commit themselves, in the socially and develop better.
Municipalities have had to save money the last few years and it will continue. They believe that one of the major spending items have been on special area. So they think that the way out of the rising cost, is if we in the daycare will take over more of the children with special needs, which previously have been placed in an expensive special group. Therefore, they will use a theory of “including children”, to make the entire nursery nurse better prepared, to accommodate these children in the normal area.
The word inclusion means to be counted. It´s about belonging to a place and that each child is a part of the community, where they feel recognized, contributing and essential. It is okay to be different and we must therefore meet all the needs of children, including those with special needs. It is also about the focus should be moved from what children doesn’t master to what their strengths and potentials are. And how we as professionals can help and support children with special needs as much as possible into the community.
