We all have to go through some difficult periods in our lives -especially when we go from childhood to adulthood. It may even be the hardest time in your life. We try to fit in, to develop independence and an identity. We try to find out who we are and to define our personality. The process is not easy, but no matter what, we know we have the freedom to choose how we want to be, and how we want to live our lives. Then imagine living in a place, where you do not have this freedom; where the society is divided by personalities; where the smart ones live together and the brave ones together and so on. Imagine a world with only five different types of personalities, five different kinds of persons, and all you have to do is to choose between them, and it will define who you are. You could be one of the selfless, the intelligent, the honest, the peaceful or the fearless - it is your choice. But first when you have chosen, there is no turning back. This is the reality in which Beatrice Prior (Tris) is living. Problem is she does not fit in in any of the categories, and therefore she is an enemy to the society; an enemy called Divergent. This is the key conflict portrayed in Veronica Roth’s novel “Divergent” (2011), and this essay is primarily based on the first five chapters of the novel.
