“Why are the Danes the world´s happiest people?”. It seems like such a simple question, but there is no specific or simple answer to it. It simply depends on each Dane, and their perspective of living in Denmark. Even though the majority of Danes say they are very happy here in Denmark, I’m pretty sure that there are Danes who will tell you otherwise. But most Danes are happy about living in Denmark, and I believe that makes Denmark something special. No matter where you live, there will always be unhappy people, and that counts for every country. The difference in Denmark is the amount of unhappy people, which is very small.
While I can´t speak for every Dane, or give you a specific answer on why Danes are the world’s happiest people, I can give you an example of my perspective about what makes Denmark such a happy place to live.
One of the most important things to achieve happiness is feeling safe. What Denmark can offer, is a sort of “safety net”. That could for example be about the education system we have. In a lot of countries you have to pay for your own education, but here in Denmark, students get a free education, and also a small amount of money each month to help them pay off their rent, pay for food, clothes and such, to make sure they will be able to actually live while studying. However I don´t know much about how the American education system as an example works, but from what I have heard and read, it leaves each student with huge loans that they will have to spend years just to pay off, which I think in my case at least, would cause a lot of stress and pressure, and that’s not exactly my perspective of something that would lead to happiness. Therefore I believe that a good and secure education system that takes care of each student, and gives you a lot and great opportunities, to achieve what you want to do in life, is something that is very important for students in Denmark to feel safe and happy.
