An American dream”We are the change, we want” Barack Obama has said about himself and the USA. Yesterday, the American voters showed that they agreed. With roots in Kansas and Kenya, and with a degree from Harvard, the country’s first Afro-American president represents an America, which dares to dream again.
“I am new enough on the national stage to allowed people on different political opinion to project their own point of view on to me as a blank screen. So I’m bound to disappoint somebody if not everybody.
So wrote Barack Obama in his book The Audacity of Hope from 2006. Back then was he on his just second year as a senator for the state Illinois. After roughly 2 years election campaign, which yesterday ended with victory in the battle for presidency, the words are still relevant. Obama is more than anything else a screen, which USA mirrors its best sides in. He has over the last two years become USA’s dream of itself.Barack Obama has been for the Democrats, where Ronald Reagan was for the Republicans in the 1980s: a promise of the start of a new era. A brand new day in America.Barack Obama is a living proof on the claim, that any individual with the right abilities and ambitions can become president of the USA. In this way he speaks to USA’s own story about itself. The myth of Obama is the myth of America.
