The American dream is the belief that America is a great country full of possibilities for everyone regardless of social class, or where they are born. The belief that anyone can achieve success and chase their dream through hard work and not by chance. America is known as the country where people can turn their life around. It is a national ethos of the United States which includes freedom, the opportunity for prosperity, and success as well as an upward social mobility for the families and children. But what is the exact definition of the ‘American Dream? Barack Obama, who served as the 44th president of the United States, announced his speech for the presidency of the United States 7th November 2007. Obama’s speech recast the story of the American Dream and this essay will analyze the “American Dream”.
Barack Obama was a political speaker who announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. Obama talks about the common American Dream that unites the American people, and the way his own family has been inspired by it, “the dreams my grandfather - who marched in Patton’s Army and moved his family west in search of opportunity” (P. 3, L. 28). Furthermore, he makes it clear that the American Dream is not about an individual desire but more like a shared value. As an America community they stand together and should be happy for each other’s success “what is unique about America is that we want these dreams for more than ourselves - we want them for each other. That's why we call it the American dream” (P. 2, L. 5-6). He wants to point out that everyone has the same opportunity no matter their race, or economic status. He targets people of every gender and race “in big cities and small towns; among men and women; young and old; black, white, and brown - Americans share a faith in simple dreams.” (P. 1, L. 9-10). His purpose is to show that he is interested in helping every American no matter their background. This screams out the theme of the American Dream which represents the idea that anyone can be successful, in America, no matter their race or background.
