How does a coward break free from his yellow existence? When does a coward’s act become an act of courageousness? And is suicide the right solution to these complications? This is some of the questions that the short story Yellow by Peter Carty deals with. In the short story our main character Jon struggles to find the answers to these questions.
In the short we come across Jon who is on a business trip to Egypt. Jon’s mental condition and life problems make up the central plot of the short story. He is dealing with low self-confidence, low success in his job, alcoholism, and almost constantly thinks of himself as coward. John must then figure out a way to escape from his problems.

The exposition: This is where we get introduced to our main character Jon and the setting, in which he is present. This occurs on page 1, lines 1-30, where we get introduced to Jon, and the reason to why he is in Egypt. We also get some info about Jon’s job and his relationship with alcohol.
