‘’This Be The Verse’’ is a poem by the poet Phillip Larkin’s (1922-1985). The choice of words in the poem is not very common in that line of literature and in the world of poetry. Phillip Larkin seems angry and filled with emotions that somehow affects you and makes you relate with his use of ‘’everyday language’’ and the way he structures the poem. You sense the variance from regular poetry in the very first sentence due to the usage of informal language:
‘’They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.’’
The ‘’fuck you up’’ part catches the reader’s attention right away. ‘’Fuck’’ is not used very often in literature and is someway very powerful and filled with despise and anger. Is Larkin addressing to himself and his parents? Or is it just a strong opinion and message he wants to send out to the people of his thoughts of how parents raise their children and impact them with their own wrongs and faults. He believes that parents don’t really mean to fuck you up, but yet they actually do fail you miserably. He is not very objective and is very forward with his pessimistic image of parenting.
