Charlie is a shy teenager with no friends that has just started on a high school with the hope of getting new friends. He misses his best friend, who committed suicide, and he writes letters to an imaginary friend sharing his feelings. Charlie has a mental illness problem in his past. Soon Charlie meets this guy called Patrick who’s a senior. Later in the movie Charlie realize that Patrick is gay. He first meets him in his woodwork class and then later at a football game where he also meets Patrick’s stepsister Sam and they become best friends. Charlie wants to be a writer really bad and he also becomes the favorite student of his teacher of literature Mr. Anderson who lends him books. Sam and Patrick introduce Charlie to their friends Mary Elisabeth and Alice and after that Charlie falls in love with Sam, but he doesn’t have the confidence to date her. At Charlie’s first real party he gets high he was offered a brownie but he didn’t know it contained hash. Everybody at the party accepted Charlie as a wallflower. He also found out that Patrick is gay by accidently walking into a room where Patrick and a football player named Brad was kissing. Brad and Patrick’s relationship lasted 7 months but the thing was that Brad had to get drunk to love Patrick because then his wouldn’t remember a thing. At New Year evening they held a party where Charlie took some LSD. At that party he also realized that he had been abused by his Aunt Helen. Sam touched his leg and at that moment he got a flashback of his Aunt Helen doing the same thing. Charlie discovers a new world and feels happy with his friends, and he dates their common friend Mary Elizabeth. He has a sister named Candice and she has a boyfriend named Derek who plays on the high school football team. But when they end their relationship, Patrick asks Charlie to stay away from them for a while and soon he triggers his mental illness again. He goes to the hospital where a doctor finally cures the origin of his problem.
