Indian Camp (1921) is a short story written by Ernest Hemingway. It’s about a boy named Nick, his father and uncle. They are taken to an Indian camp with Indians. Nick sits in the stern of the boat with his father, who is a doctor. The father is going to help an Indian woman with giving birth and he took his son with him as his intern. The woman has tried to giving birth the baby for two days but without any luck. And a caesarean has to be performed. Nick’s father performs the caesarean on the woman without any anesthesia, using a pocket knife and afterwards sews her back, with fishing string. Nick watching the whole thing and assists his father by holding a basin. Throughout the operation Nick's father passes on his knowledge about child births to Nick. The caesarean is successful and a baby boy is born. After the operation is over with, they discover that the Indian woman’s husband has committed suicide in his bed, by cutting his throat with a razor. Nick’s father ushers nick out the shanty, but nick has seen it all. The whole experience gets Nick to thinking whole the way back, where he sits alone in the stern of the boat, he asks his father questions about life and death.
