The short story Indian Camp is taking place early in the morning. The boy Nick and his father gets up to the stern of a rowboat. Nick and his father who is doctor are not traveling alone, they have Nick's uncle George with them. George are sitting in another rowboat - the camp boat. The journey is very long, and it is very dark. When They are sitting in the rowboat, Nick´s father tells Nick, that they are going to the Indian camp, because there is a very sick lady. The other boat is already beached, when Nick and his father arrive, because the Indians are really good at rowing. When they arrive to the Indian camp, uncle Georg is smoking a cigar, and he also gives the Indians cigars. When they come to the beach they walk in to the woods. They walk on a trail, and when they arrive to the Indian camp, it is much lighter. From the shanties where the Indians live are there lights, and in the nearest shanty there is a light in the window. In the doorway there is an old woman, and she is standing with a lantern. When they come in the shanty there is a young woman. She is laying on a wooden bunk. For 2 days the young woman has trying to have her baby. All the old women help her, but the men are not in the near, because they don't want to hear the noises the young woman makes. The young woman is laying in bottom of the bunk, and she is laying on a quilt. In the upper bunk is the young woman's husband, he is laying there because he cut his foot with an axe, from 3 days ago. Nick's father tells Nick about, when a woman being in labor. It hurts really on the woman, because she is trying so hard to have the baby, unfortunately Nick's father doesn't have any anesthetic. The problem is that the woman's baby, is not laying with the head first as supposed. Nick's father decide to operate the young woman. Under the operation, uncle George and 3 Indians have to hold her, so she is laying still. It hurts so badly so, she bite uncle George, and he gets a bit angry. Now the baby is born, and it is a boy. Just after the operation he takes the placenta, and he put it in a basin. It was a Caesarean operation with a jackknife, and after sew he it up with tapered gut leaders. The father feels elated, because it is a difficult operation and it went well. After some time, they find the husband to the young woman, his throat is cut from ear to ear. The Indian husband has commit suicide. At the end are Nick and his father going home, they talk about dead and Nick says that he is pretty sure that he would never die. Made by Amalie Theil Espensen
