In three paragraphs, characterise Nick, his father and the setting in Ernest Hemingway’s short story ”Indian Camp” (approx. 600 words). It is extremely important that you include short quotations, which you have to comment on using as many technical terms as possible.
Nick
Nick is the main character in the short story “Indian Camp”, who develops through the severity of the events he witnesses at the shanty: A new life beginning and another one ending in the most dramatic of circumstances to be imagined. He is not curious to see how his father operates on the woman, and even though his father is keen to explain, “Nick did not watch. His curiosity had been gone for a long time” (p. 15, l. 4). The text does not say why he is no longer curious, but by reading between the lines, the sight of blood and the screams must be overwhelming and frightening for a young boy. Nick’s development is a story of loss of innocence, an enforced progression of maturing away from the childish curiosity and the innocence of childhood.
Throughout the story, Nick seems a bit quiet, and does not interfere much with anyone. The overwhelming experience though, makes him ask his father about these things in general.
