Analyse af Susan Cheevers 'My Little Bit of Country'

Man and nature is a well-known subject for books, short stories and articles. Probably, because of the subject’s big relevance in the modern world we live in today. It is normal for parents to pass on the knowledge to their own children about how to live in the city or in co-existence with nature. But today many parents tend to keep their children away from the nature.

In the short story “My Little Bit of Country”, written by the American writer Susan Cheever, the theme “man and nature” dominates the act of the story. Cheever mentions a lot of contrasts about life in the city and life in the suburbs throughout the essay, but is it really possible to know whether it is best to grow up in the city or on the countryside?

The essay is build up around Cheever’s childhood in New York, and the suburbs. The essay portrays the theme “culture and nature ". Cheever compares life in suburbia and life in the city’s many opportunities.

Cheever loved to live in the big city, but unfortunately her parents wanted to move to the suburbs. “Unfortunately for me and my already full-blown love affair with Central Park, my parents had a dream that were too big for our rented two-bedroom apartment …. They wanted more children and a family. They longed for the postwar American chimera” (ll. 69-77 p. 8).
