Characterization of Parvez and Ali and their relationship

The story is written in a third-person view, and is told over 10 pages. The story is about a fathers relationship to his son, and the troubles they have to go through as a family. The father Parvez has great expectations for his son, Ali. He has always supplied the son with what he wanted in life, weather it was education, or whatever.

Parvez and Ali has a very untraditionally relationship, no the ideal relationship for a father and a son to have. Parvez has an unhealthy relationship to his wife. He actually often tries to find an excuse not to see her. He has a ‘’friend’’ named Bettina. Parvez has known Bettina for about 3 years. She works as a prostitute. Parvez is very into his career, and has been a taxi driver for the past 20 years of his life. Parvez prefers work at night, it both pays of better and he doesn’t get to see the wife all the time, which he likes not to sometimes. Then he calls Bettina and they would drive out at night, Parvez would be her last costumer of the day. They have a lot to talk about, and Parvez can tell her things that he couldn’t dream of telling his wife. He kind of sees Bettina as a gateway escape to his own wife, and he loves her for it. Parvez and his family moved to England a long time ago, they came from Pakistan were they left their old life and their religion. The son Ali, has always been a very polite and nice boy. But one day, all of that changes and so does his relationship to the father. The boy starts moving all his belongings from his room, here among his TV, video and so on. Ali had always been a very quiet boy but suddenly he developed a very sharp tongue towards his father. One of the main problems in the relationship between the father and the son Ali, is that Ali is having a very hard time accepting, that his father is fooling around with a woman like Bettina, especially when he is a married man. Although Ali has no prove, that he actually is unfaithful to his mother, but a platonic relationship could easily be defined as cheating. Parvez has always been the ideal father for Ali, and had paid for his education as an accountant. Parvez is very skeptical for his son’s sudden turnings in life. He tried to figure out what the reason was for he’s sons sudden behavior. He got told that his son probably was on drugs, and he needed to sell all of his belongings to be able to pay for it. He then proceeded to search through all of Ali’s stuff, to find any form of leads to his behavior. The father is very pushed by the fact of not knowing what’s going on in his son’s head. He would follow the boy around the house, looking for clues and one morning he looks through the keyhole to his sons door, and catches his son praying. It turns out that Ali, wasn’t on drugs or selling them, he actually just went religious again. And most of his belongings he had given away, to people in need. The whole time Parvez has thought his son were a fanatic, due to the two of them having almost no contact to each other.
