Parvez is the father of Ali, a night cap driver and a modern Muslim living in England, the term modern Muslim in this case can be used to describe his detachment from some of the rules the Koran upholds, such as not eating the flesh of pigs, and drinking alcohol, which the teachings of the Koran forbids. However he still considers himself a Muslim, but comments on his loose lifestyle by the teachings of the Koran by saying “we are but human”. He acknowledges the faults of his way and current lifestyle, which by many would be considered British. He didn’t consider himself much of a father to Ali, but rather that of a father as in how close they used to be, his way of thinking is unable to comprehend why Ali would throw away his current lifestyle for the teachings of the Koran, which throws Parvez into alcoholism.

The SonName: Ali

Formerly the prime example of a pupil, whom the story revolves around, is the son of Parvez, whom was studying in college to be an accountant. Ali seems to have given up his “earthly” desire and live by the teachings of the Koran, which includes praying 5-6 times a day, no alcohol, and not consuming any kind of meat associated with pigs. He has given up college, and now seeks a future as a Muslim councilor, guiding other Muslims out of the criminal environment, to help them find a better place more suited for them. He looks down on his father, and has very little respect of him, as he doesn’t consider him a good Muslim.
