Skriftlig Opgave 1: - Sam’s relationship with her father In the short story, Red from Green by Maile Meloy. It is explained how important it is to have a good relationship with your parents, when you are in Sam's age, which is 15. So that they can help you make important decisions, in life while you're young and unexperienced. In the short story Sam Turner and her father are on their yearly float trip down the river, but their current one is to be their last one because, Sam is starting to grow up to be a real woman. Sam at a point in her life where she has to make a decision, whether she wants to accept an offer made by her father, whether she wants to start on boarding or remain in their local one; Next year when she becomes a sophomore. It is a very hard decision for her to make, and her father is not exactly helping her make it. Every time Sam brings up the topic, her father seems to be rather dismayed. It is probably because, Sam and her father have a very close relationship to each other because; Sam's mother died when she was in a very young age. It can be seen line 47 that Sam's mother is dead, when the narrator says; “Her father had guns, but he had not been hunting since her mother died”. Because of that, he may have a hard time, letting go of his daughter, when she could just stay in the local school and by that a little longer with him. Obviously, Sam father only wants the best for his daughter, which should also be the reason, her father offered Sam to go to this exclusive boarding school in the first place. Another, interesting episode in the story is when Layton attempts to have sex with Sam. Sam had wanted her father to protect her from that, but he did not. He just left her with Layton. Sam kept telling herself that, her father did not know, what was going to happen. That one mistake from Sam's father actually damaged or changed the relationship, between them so much it triggered Sam's will to go to the boarding school. - A characterization of Sam In the short story, Red from Green by Maile Meloy. The main character Sam develops allot mentally because of the actions and choices of some specific people surrounding her on her last float trip with her father. You could say that Sam grew up mentally on that floating trip. The main affection came from her uncle's client Layton. Clayton sees and treats Sam in adult way, nobody has ever done that before and that is why it affects Sam so much. One important spot in the story is when we can see this is on line 93, when Sam hit a bottle win one of Clayton's pistol. The narrator said following: “She'd never been so proud of anything”. This event also tells us that Sam may not have done so many exiting things in her life before. It was first later that evening in the story, when Clayton attempted to have sex with Sam. Sam had wanted her father to step in and protect her from that. However, he did not; he just left her with Clayton. That event also changed Sam's mental state, into being a more independent one. Since she had actually avoided having sex with Clayton, without her father's help. This event helped Sam clearing her mind whether she wanted to accept her father's offer on going to a boarding school, when she would become a sophomore. Going to boarding school means Sam would have to let go of her father's protection, which she discovered, she might not need as much as she may have thought, before Clayton attempted
