There are a lot of different subjects which can be discussed as themes of this story. One of the main is guilt. I think Sylvia has had a burden within herself for a very long time concerning how she has raised her children. It seems as though she doesn’t feel happy about any situation really, almost put to tears once during the story, and having emotional flashbacks throughout the entire story. Most of the guilt might be placed in hate to her husband and father of the children who left them creating very hard terms for their further lifestyle, but then again it seems she has taken the hate upon herself because she wasn’t able to be the good wife who would’ve made him stay. She also isn’t very content about how she has raised her children. “When her own children were small it had all seemed to matter so much, how they turned out. She had been hard on them, and for what? There had been no recognition, and although once they had dominated her existence, now they lived lives she had to screw her eyes up to pick out.” (Page 3 line 88) As shown in the quote, she is really not happy about the outcome of her children, and I can’t say I can blame her. One is working with stacking shelves in a supermarket far away, and the other has a wife which Sylvia hasn’t even seen yet. And on top of that, the son with a wife lives in a caravan far away.
