Most Wanted is a term which is used about highly wanted criminals who have committed extreme crimes but it’s also the title of a British short story. The story is told by Michelle’s elder sister. In the story we are introduced to a family consisting of a mother and father and their two girls. When the youngest girl is about eight years old, she starts changing and the only one who has noticed it is her elder sister, who is busy with exploring her own body sexually.
Michelle’s change is first brought to their attention one afternoon. Michelle has just finished playing with Allison Church, when, to her disappointment, her father arrives to take her home. Normally when her mother picks her up, she also checks Michelle’s possessions, but this day it was Mrs. Church who checked Michelle’s gym bag. While she checked the bag, she spotted her own daughter’s shampoo. Michelle’s dad didn’t react in a very clever way. He forced Michelle to apologize, and when dragged her crying out to the car.
Michelle’s dad is a strict and old-fashioned man. And even though he has a girl at the age of fourteen, he doesn’t know much about raising a child. “For the first time in months, Michelle had got Dad’s full attention…” It’s only after he has caught her stealing that he gives her the attention a child needs. This is also reinforced in the beginning when we are told that the parents “engrossed by other things…” didn’t notice the change in their own daughter. But remarkably the dad always seems to have time to watch television.
