What’s your problem? The book ”What’s your problem” is about a boy called Jaspal. All Jaspal wants is to fit in. Just have an easy and normal life, but that’s pretty hard when your parents are from India, and your skin is dark…. Jaspal’s father moves his family from Leicester to Nottingham, to start a “better life” and have “a new beginning“. Jaspal’s father is opening a newsagent shop. Jaspal is angry and very upset at his dad for moving. He liked his life in Leicester, he had friends, and he wasn’t the only Asian. He had a good life! Jaspal’s family have hardly moved in before the racial abuse starts. One of the first days in Nottingham, graffiti is sprayed at the front window of the newsagent shop. The words had said: “Paki Scum Go Home!” And that’s just the beginning… Dog shit is coming through the letterbox. Day after day, both young and old people, come into the shop to buy fags and other stuff.

Jaspal and his family have to hear all their racist comments; and there are plenty of them. Jaspal's dad tells him, that things will be better - but the racism just gets worse.Jaspal’s family is suddenly also being threatened. Mysteries letters from: “The Brotherhood Of The White Fist” arrive. The letters are very threatening, but Jaspal father doesn’t take them seriously…. Jaspal isn’t doing well at school. He is being bullied and no one cares at all. Even though everything seems out of hope, Jaspal meets Katie, Sam and Jemma. Jemma has a stepbrother called Steggsy. Unfortunately Steggsy is the worst bully. He victimizes Jaspal at the worst! Jemma tries to protect Jaspal, but there’s nothing she can do…. Jaspal tries to convince himself that things will be better. He really wants to believe in his father’s optimistic words. But actually things aren’t going great at home… Jaspal’s father suddenly drinks a lot, and Jaspal’s mother is getting thinner and thinner. She just tries to fit in, but she’s clearly not feeling well.
