Nelson Mandela was the first black president in South Africa, and he is the best known apartheid opponent. Mandela never answered racism with racism. He never wavered in his devotion to democracy and equality.
Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th of July 1918 in Transkei in South Africa. When his father was no longer tribal chief they moved to Qunu. Then Mandela began in school his teacher gav him the name Nelson. Few years later his father died. In 1937 Mandela entered university which he finished in 2 years. In 1939 Mandela began his studies for Bachelor of Arts degree at the Fort Hare University, but got expelled in 1940 for joining in a student protest. He did, however, return in 1943 to graduate.
In 1952 Nelson Mandela was chosen at the National Volunteer-in-Chief. This campaign against the laws gave him and 19 others suspended for two years, which meant nine months hard work. In August 1952 Mandale and Oliver Tampo established the first black firm in South Africa.
On 5th December 1955 he got arrested, which lead to the 1956 Teason Trail, but he got acquitted 29th March 1961. The 5 August 1963 Nelson Mandale was arrested in a police roadblock outside Howick. He was sentenced to five years for leaving the country witout permission and request to strike. Futhermore 11 June 1964 Mandela and seven others were sentenced to life imprisonment. He got released the 11 February 1990.
