Nelson Rolihlala Mandela was born in Mvezo, a village near Umata in Transkei 1918. His middlename means “troublemaker”, which you can say he is! His dad, Henry Mandela (Gadla Henry Mphakanyisma), was chief himself, and he was also adviser to the chief warrior of Thembuland. And when his father was stripped of his title as tribal, the family moved to Qunu, because Nelson's mother had family in Qunu. When Nelson was seven years he was the first in his family to attend school. At the school a Methodist teacher gave him the name "Nelson". Nelson's father died of tuberculosis when he went on a mission school at the royal palace. Following Xhosa custom he was initiated at the age of 16 years and started on Clarkebury Boarding Institute (Clarkebury boarding school), where he learned about Western culture. He received his Junior Certificate exam in two years, although the usual was three years. In 1937 Mandela moved as a 19-year-old to Wesleyan College in Fort Beaufort, where most royal of Thembu tribe went, and began to take an interest in boxing and running. He then started a bachelor degree at Fort Hare University, where he met Oliver Tambo, Oliver was his good friend and colleague for life.
