Rolihlahla (troublemaker) was the third kid in the Mandela family. His dad was Gadla Henry Mandela, and his mom was the father’s third wife, Nosekeni. His father fighted for the rights of the black people. At the age of 7, Rolihlahla was the first member in the whole family to go to school. He quickly learned to write and read. The white people wouldn’t call the black people there right names, so Rolihlahla teacher, Mrs. Mdingane gave him the English name Nelson. So Rolihlahla was called Nelson Mandela in school. When Nelson was in the age of 9, his father died of lung illness. Then his mother took on a journey to the Great Palace, the royal residence of the king of the Thembu people. She left him with the words, “Be strong, my boy”. The rest of Nelson childhood was with the Thembu king and his wives. Justice, the king’s son, was 13 and became Nelson’s best friend.
All around the worlds, there is ritual you have to do, so you can change from a boy to a man. It is called circumcision. In the ritual you cut the foreskin of a boy off with a knife. Without pain-killer and the boy must not cry. When Nelson was 16, the king decided that he was ready. To prove he is a man, a Thembu boy must to do something risky. Nelson decided to steal a pig from a local black farmer.
