Nelson Mandela, was originally called Rohilala Mandela. He was born in a village called Mvezo, in 1918. Nelson Mandela joined the ANC (African National Congress) in 1944. The main goal for ANC, was to increase the colored people’s rights in South Africa. Nelson Mandela was therefor known as an apartheid activist, who was against the apartheid.

Antiapartheid activist wanted a nonviolent demonstration against the apartheid, but this led to violent response from the South African government. Nelson Mandela wanted to destroy apartheid in a peaceful way, but this was very hard when more and more colored people were killed.

In 1952 Nelson Mandela got sentenced to jail for nine months, because of the protest activities which Nelson Mandela was head of. This was the first time Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Eight years after a demonstration took place in Sharpeville, the police fired at the protesters. In 1961 (one year after), the movement called “All-African National Action Council” was created by the antiapartheid leaders.

Later, Nelson Mandela became the head of a ANC militant organization called “Umkhonto we Sizwe” or “The Spear of the Nation”. This militant organization was founded because of the Sharpeville massacre. The organization was an answer to the African government, because of the Sharpeville massacre and the violence they dealt to the protesters. The organization warned the African government to resist the act of government terror, so they could increase the political rights. But this never happened, and in 1961 the organization launched its first attacked against the African government. The organization then was classified as a “terrorist organization”, by the United states and the South African government. But for us this act was an act of anti-apartheidism and to fight for the colored people in South Africa.
