Claras Day - Essay

If one is to determine a specific theme for this text it would be loneliness. It is a fascinating  way to express that theme/emotion as the classic way would be more 'lone wolf' as for an  example, the main character of a story is being bullied or is going through a troubling time in  his/her life. In this story it is not that way and it is not the typical kind as one would think it is.  In this case, it is kind of unknown. Clara is not aware of it at first but realises it at the same  time as the reader. She is perhaps going through a phase of finding herself as what she is  and not what she has to be.    Setting  The story takes place at school and at home. As many students would agree, Clara seems  to think that school is quite dull. Anyone can relate to school and particularly the opening of  the story, the school assembling. When you stand there it can seem quite meaningless and  perhaps also ridiculous. In this case they also have uniforms which, in my opinion, and  perhaps also Clara's, seems a bit annoying as it is unnecessary and perhaps do not fit. The  hallway seem a bit boring. There is a painting, some chairs, some ashtrays and that is about  it. All of that together could be a reason as to why Clara dropped all of her clothes in the  morning assembly.     As we come further into the story, we are at Clara's home. Her mother is working flexible  hours and has decided not to work in the afternoon. The house does not seem as anything  special, nothing about the house is described so one can only imagine what it looks like. We  know there is a bannister so it could be that there are two floors in the house, but that is all  we know. Although it is an important setting as perhaps 40­50% of the story takes place  there, it does not seem to have an important effect at Clara.     Characterisation  The only person we really are told anything about is Clara. She is a common school girl who,  in her mother's opinion, have always been a prude. She does not say very much so she is  probably shy or having some kind of anxiety of speaking, which is not uncommon. It seems  that she is longing for something that she perhaps is not aware of what is, but it is clear that  something needs to change. Perhaps a guess could be that she needs to unfold herself in a  way that allows her to see herself as the one she truly is.     Her relationship with her mother is not bad, it is just not that strong. They never have a  dialogue because Clara does not answer. That makes us feel as Clara is empty inside and  does not know what to say to her mother, which could be the cause as to why they do not  seem that close. It also seems that her mother is more focused on her 'friend' Stan. It looks  as if they are a bit more than just friends as he stays the night, wanders around the house in  a towel only and is the reason that her mother does not work in the afternoon. It seems as it  makes Clara feel lonely or abandoned. Her mother does not speak that much to her, she  primarily speaks to Stan. If one is to look at it from Clara's point of view, it seems that Stan is  actually more interested in Clara than her mother is.   1/2
